CRUISING CANADA

CANADA'S VIEW OF MT RUSHMORE

JUST KIDDING OF COURSE. . .

One truth is, the grass sure does look greener on the other side. For Americans cruising Canada, Canada ranks as the highlight of their journey. For Canadians cruising America, America ranks as their favorite. Our opinion? Both are two great reasons to make this journey twice.

THE TRENT SEVERN WATERWAY

YOU ARE IN FOR AN AMAZING VOYAGE

The Trent Severn Waterway is 240-miles and has 45 Locks. On this beautiful portion of your adventure, the Locks will lift your boat to near 900-feet above sea level. In addition, it leads you to Georgian Bay and the North Channel, where depending on your destination and detours, you will be as close to the Artic Circle as you will be the Tropics of the Equator when in Florida.

ANCHORED IN "THE POOL"

FROM THE NARROWS TO THE POOL

Located between Killarney and Little Current, the "Pool" at Baie FIne is one of the best anchoring out experiences cruising Canada. Anchoring out away from City lights and marinas, will bless you with an incredible view of the night sky, a billion colorful stars and even the Northern Lights.

BENJAMIN ISLAND ANCHORAGE

LOTS OF ISLANDS - LOTS OF ANCHORAGES

Unlike the ICW with Inlets, Outlets and tidal waters, cruising Canada offers clean, clear, still waters with thousands of Islands to protect you from the wind and waves. From Trent to Port Severn through Georgian Bay, North Channel and Drummond Island, (your entry back into the US, and Lake Michigan, this portion of your Great Loop offers miles of beautiful cruising.

THE BIG CHUTE

IT'S A MARINE RAILWAY FOR BOATS!

After my first two Loops which were both on the American side, a Canadian ask me if I had boated across the "Big Chute". When he told me what it was, I had a hard time believing him. It's amazing! You cruise into the Rail Car, it leaves the water on one side taking your boat with it, goes over a patch of land, and back down in the water on the other side. Fascinating to experience.

PICTON HARBOR

KINGSTON - PICTON - TRENT

From Oswego, your route should be to Kingston, then Picton, then Trent. If you don't take the Rideau to Ottawa, this will be your route to enter the Trent Seern Canal. It's a fabulously beautiful voyage, and Kingston and Picton are both great stops.

OTTAWA

CRUISING THE RIDEAU

From the above flight of 8-Locks, you are 2-Locks and 97-miles from Monteal. This is one beautiful, historic, and interesting voyage. It is filled from one end to the other with interesting sites to see and historic places to visit, but you have to get off your boat to explore and enjoy it all.

BYWARD MARKET

OTTAWA - MUST VISIT

They claim 50,000 people a WEEKEND visit Byward Market in the Summer. This is one people watching happening place. More Restaurants, Bars, and unique one-of-a-kind shopping than you can shake a Beaver Tail or throw a Butter Tart at. Great way to waste an entire day!

KILLARNEY

GEORGIAN BAY

If the Killarney Mountain Lodge doesn't tempt you off your boat to spend a night in a hotel with more hot water than you can bathe in, nothing will. Unless you anchor out a night or two in "the Pool" at Baie Fine, which we highly suggest, this will be your last stop before reaching Little Current.

PETERBOROUGH HYDRUALIC LOCK

LOCK 21 ON THE TRENT-SEVERN

It's an incredible experience and site to see. Unlike most Locks, this one operates with two "bathtub" like containers that you cruise into. As one side goes up and lifts your boat 65' feet, the other side goes down 65'. Cool huh!

ON THE TRENT SEVERN

I WONDER IF AMAZON DELIVERS HERE

Cruising Canada is simply a beautiful voyage from beginning to end. Waters are clean, cool, and their are more islands than one can possibly count.

HERBERT FISH & CHIPS

KILLARNEY

World Famous for its locally fresh caught daily Pickerel (we call it Walleye). The bus has been replaced with a restaurant, and a new one is in Sudbury. Did someone mention "inflation"? In 2018 the large fish dinner was $18.00 In 2021, it was $27.18. Not sure what the 18 cents is for, must be the extra tartar.

GREAT PLACE FOR A CHURCH

IT'S NEAR HELL'S GATE

St Peter's Church is a beautiful little church. The only way anyone can get there however, is by boat. Some parishioners, not all of course, will have to boat through "Hell's Gate" to get there.

SNUG HARBOR

ONE GREAT RESTAURANT

Upstairs, you will find Gilly's Restaurant. It's one of the best when it comes to great fresh food and friendly service. Their Pickerel (Walleye) is fresh daily and their Cole slaw is the best we've ever had anywhere. It's free Dine, Dock & Shop, with overnight based on availability.

SNUG HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE

ONE OF 5 LIGHTHOUSES WITH A HISTORY

This place has an interesting history. Or I should say 'beginning to ending'. In it took 5 years to complete.

PRIVATE ISLAND WITH COTTAGE

YOU SEE A LOT OF THESE IN CANADA

Lots of Islands and lots of islands have a cottage on them. I wonder if Amazon delivers. . .

JONES FALLS LOCK

LOCK STAFF OPENING THE GATES

Thank goodness Canadian Parks hires Students to operate the hand crank on these Locks, at 75yo, I'm not sure I could do it. The Rideau and Trent-Severn Canals are Canada' Parks most visited attractions.

LOCKS, LOCKS & LOTS OF LOCKS

110 LOCKS - THAT'S LOTS OF LOCKS

From Watertown, if you take the Champlain Canal north to Montreal, and the Rideau from Montreal to Ottawa and Kingston, then take the Trent-Severn to Georgian Bay, you will have cruised through 110 Locks. I guess in a way, that would make you a Lockmaster.

JONES FALLS

CRUISING THE RIDEAU

Jones Falls Lock and Jones Falls Dam are amazing feats of engineering. The Dam, completed in 1831 was the highest Dam in North America. Furthermore, it was all built by hand. Stones cut and shaped in a Quarry 5-miles away were used to build the dam which is 27' thick at the base, 12' thick at the top, and 60' high and 350' long.

LITTLE CURRENT LIGHTHOUSE

LITTLE CURRENT IS A GREAT STOP

Great place, great restaurants and some very unique shops. We always stop at Little Current. .
