WHAT MAKES THE GREAT LOOP SO GREAT

NAVAL ACADEMY

TOO MUCH TO SEE, TOO LITTLE TIME

Far too many great destinations on the Great Loop simply offer too much to see & do and too little time to see & do it all. Annapolis & the Navy Academy are two of those places. John Paul Jones, "Father of America's Navy" and a lot of American history is found here, and it all starts the moment you step off your boat.

TITUSVILLE

ICW MILE 878.3

If you're lucky, you will get to see a Rocket Launch from neaby Cape Canaveral. Beginning again in 2021 NASA has stepped up the Launches. It is pretty common now to see 3 or 4 a month. Most of them don't make the News as do the more newsworthy like the Moon Launch & Atremis launches.

KINGS BAY SUBMARINE BASE

ICW MILE 710

Talk about shocking scene, wait till you have a submarine approaching your stern - on the ICW of all places. Of all our adventures around the Loop, we've only seen a submarine underway once and it was here at Kings Bay.

BAREFOOT LANDING

ICW MILE 354.4

You are just 1 mile from Myrtle Beach. This is one fun stop. With over 40 unique Stores, 15 great Restaurants, a live Entertainment Theatre, and popular live music at the House of Blues. This is a handy place to get off the boat, walk around, have an ice cream, and watch the local natives.

BACKSTREET PUB

BEAUFORT, NC

Across from Morehead City, you will find Beaufort. About a half block off Front St. at the Beaufort Docks, you will find the Backstreet Pub/Bar. It is about the "Saltiest" of Pubs/Bars you will ever encounter. It's as "maritime" as Beaufort's Maritime Museum, and it has live music, a fireplace, a nice patio area, and just about as much an Old Salt's paradise as one can get. Friendly Staff serving good food & drinks as well.

THE WACCAMAW RIVER

ICW MILE 383

Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes in the middle of nowhere, you find yourself. The Waccamaw is one beautiful stretch of the Atlantic ICW. It's one of those places you will simply enjoy going slow.

BALTIMORE'S INNER HARBOR

CHESAPEAKE BAY MILE 38.4

Baltimore's Inner Harbor is all you need to know about Baltimore. It has enough here to keep you busy for several days. Our suggestion? Skip the Chain restaurants and eat at the local ones.

CHICAGO

NAVY PIER & MILLENIA PARK

Navy Pier is right near the Marina. This is a great experience, but to really enjoy Chicago, you must get off your boat and visit Millenia Park, and eat out at a couple of world-renowned Chicago restaurants.

MOREHEAD CITY

ICW MILE 205

Free docks, and several great restaurants right at the docks. Charter Fishing Boats make it fun to watch when they come in and show off their catch. We normally spend a night or two here before moving over just 3-miles to visit Beaufort.

BEAUFORT

3 MILES FROM MOREHEAD CITY

I can't help it. When I think of Beaufort, I think of Clawson's 1905 Restaurant & Pub and you can't leave before paying a visit to the Backstreet Pub. Last year they were $2.00 a foot and offered courtesy car. Great place, good shelter, friendly people.

SOLOMON ISLANDS CHESAPEAKE

CHESAPEAKE BAY MILE 38.4

Fact is, one could dedicate an entire summer just for cruising Chesapeake Bay. It's tough to decide where you want to go in Chesapeake Bay. Most every place has something really special to offer.

THE ERIE CANAL

GUARD GATES ON THE ERIE CANAL

From a distance, these "Guard Gates" will appear a little scary, but don't worry. If you can clear the fixed bridges, you can clear the Guard Gates. The Erie Canal has lots of great "Canal Towns" all along the way.

GREEN TURTLE MARINA

CUMBERLAND RIVER MILE 32

If ever there was a Marina where one could spend an entire vacation, this is it. This is the largest marina between Chicago and the Gulf ICW. Everything you need and more is here. We've known Loopers that spent two weeks here.

PATTIES 1800 SETTLEMENT

A LITTLE WALK FROM THE MARINA

It is less than 3/4 of a mile walk from Green Turtle Marina to Pattie's Restaurant and well worth every step of the way. We go for the food, but there's lots to see and do here. This is Kentucky. You might want to take home a little Moonshine.

CABBAGE KEY

THAT "CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE"

It's been verified. This is the place that inspired Jimmy Buffet's song "Cheeseburger In Paradise". It makes for a great stop for lunch between Burnt Store Marina & Sanibel Island & Ft. Myers Beach. And yes, they surviived hurricane Ian. We always stop here for lunch.

NERVOUS NELLIE'S

FT. MYERS BEACH

Lots of great stuff to see & do at Ft. Myers beach. Unique shops, loads of eye candy, great restaurants, but Nervous Nellie's is our favorite for dinner. This is one lively place. The best way to see it is from "the Big M" marina. Nellie's also survived hurricane Ian.

TARPON SPRINGS

GIWW MILE 150

Free docks, and several great restaurants right at the docks. Charter Fishing Boats make it fun to watch when they come in and show off their catch, and the Greek restaurants are the real thing.

Kokomo Beach

CRUISING THE FLORIDA KEYS

Believe it or not, the Carribean has nothing over the Florida Keys as well as Clearwater Beach, Destin, and many other Beaches in Florida. The Keys are a whole new, almost different world, experience. If you've never been, this is the time to take a little detour and go.

CAPE COD & BOSTON

ON THE WAY YOU WILL CRUISE BY SANDWICH, MA

The Atlantic ICW officially ends north of Boston. From NY Harbor, there is a canal that takes us from Buzzard Bay to Cape Cod that shortens the voyage by 135-miles. Boston is great place to visit, especially if you like lobsters. Faneuil Hall Market Place is a must experience. On the way you will cruise by Sandwich, MA. If the police there pulled me over, I don't think I could keep a straight face.

WASHINGTON DC

ON THE POTOMAC

From Chesapeake Bay, you can take the Potomac to Washington DC, and dock yourself right smack in the middle of where it's all happening. The new multi-million dollar riverwalk Boardwalk makes visiting DC's most popular attractions as close as you can get. In fact, much closer than driving your car and getting a hotel room. If you've never been, you may never be so close again.

LOOPER FAVORITES

We all have our own favorite cruising grounds and favorite destinations. Ask 10 Loopers that have completed this voyage to list 20 of their favorite destinations, and chances are no lists will be alike.
For example, we love the Ft. Pierce Marina & the on-site restaurants, the River's Edge Marina and on-site Hurricane Patties restaurant in St. Augustine. We also like Big Joe's in New Smyrna (it's one of the most popular 'hole-in-the-wall restaurants I've ever seen), but the food is great. Then there is Sudbury Crab Co in Sudbury, the Fillin' Station near Lady's Island Marina (that's a hole-in-wall as well). We love Beaufort, and everything at Barefoot Landing, the Southern Salt Seafood restaurant in Morehead City, the City Kitchen and Backstreet Pub in Beaufort, NC. We also love about 150 or so other restaurants, and in case you didn't notice, my favorites revolve around great regional restaurants offering fabulously delicious local favorites.
Others have favorites based on tourist attractions. Many love the big cities while others love the small towns & villages. Some prefer destinations with Museums, while some have favorites that are in the middle of nowhere.
One thing for sure, you will find your own favorite destinations cruising the Loop. Many of them will be fondly remembered for the rest of your days.

THE SHOW STOPPER

THE GREAT "U-TURN"

All routes lead here! This 19' 6" bridge is the lowest fixed bridge we all must go under. Unlike the 17' bridge in downtown Chicago, and unlike the 15' 6" bridge on the west end of the Erie Canal, there is no waterway route around this bridge. If you cannot clear it, your Great Loop becomes a Great U-turn.

ICW CHANNEL MARKERS

RED RIGHT = RETURN TO TEXAS

These Red triangle and Green square signs mark the channels in the waterways. ONLY the ones with the little yellow stickers mark the ICW. For Loopers, the green square markers with the yellow stickers will be kept on you Starboard (or right) side as you cruise the ICW towards NYC, the Hudson River or Boston. For us, Red on the Right means "Return to Texas". For seagoing vessels, the Red triangles without the yellow stickers, on their Starboard indicate "Return to Sea". So don't get them confused, and make sure the markers you are following have those little yellow stickers indicating you are on the ICW.

GREAT BINOCULARS

YOU WILL NEED GREAT BINOCULARS

Entering Lake Okeechobee, this is a good example of why you need a great (not just good) pair of binoculars. While we can sea the channel markers we are unable to see if they have the little yellow ICW stickers that indicate we are on the ICW.

In a few places on this voyage, even the signs themselves are difficult to find from a distance, not to mention the little yellow stickers. Lucky us however, your GPS will indicate where these markers are located, as well as the channel.
