A Little Salty  &  A Little Fresh

America’s Great Loop is a little salty and a little fresh. Matter of fact, it’s about even – 50% salty & 50% fresh. Half or your 6,000-mile voyage around the Great Loop will be in salty brackish water. It starts just below the last Lock on the Tombigbee River, runs thru Mobile Bay, all along the Gulf ICW, around Florida, up the Atlantic ICW and into the Hudson River stopping at the Federal Lock 1 entrance to the Erie Canal.

In addition to being a little salty, the above portion of your route is also a Tidal. You will be in tidal waters 50% of this voyage. So, you will need Tide Charts for each area you are cruising in. The tide’s ebb & flow changes the water’s depth from near 2 feet in the south as it gradually increasing to around 5 feet in New Jersey to 6 feet at the entrance to the Hudson River.
